Introduction
The Joburg Market has its origins in the centre of Johannesburg where, in 1893, it was established in what was then called ‘Market Square’. By 1913, the Market was moved to Newtown, at the location now housing the Market Theatre. By 1972, the Johannesburg City Council took the decision to move to the present site in City Deep, where it commenced trading in September 1974. The Joburg Market is the only market of its type in Africa and, indeed, the largest market in the world in terms of trade volumes.
‘I joined the Joburg Market in August 2008 as head of the cashiering department and I am responsible for managing the Market’s daily cashiering activities including staff’

‘Working with cash and interacting with people of varying backgrounds, races and creeds is what makes my job interesting. Equally, it is also what makes my job challenging as it requires attention to detail, customer-service skills and a great degree of patience. The type of person who thrives at Joburg Market is one who works hard and smart, is ambitious, patient, results driven and team spirited.’
