Employer Branding Conference
The CRF Institute is proud to present the new school of employer branding. Hosted by the CRF Institute (Best Employers) and the University of Cape Town Graduate School of Business, this ground-breaking event presented Employer Branding as it has never been presented before. The Conference and Two-Day Executive Education Course, took place in Johannesburg in September and brought together world-class business experts, presenting a multi-media, highly interactive look at Employer Branding today, and for the near future.
Be inspired by the presentations held by international Employer Branding expert Richard Mosely (People in Business) and a range of other experts on topics like branding, psychology, futurism, economics and social media.

CSI Initiative: Opening the gate to opportunities
Over 70% of the unemployed in South Africa (25 % of the overall population) falls in the 15 – 34 age-group. The National Planning Commission argues that “In South Africa, if young people fail to get a job by the age of 24, they are likely to never get full-time formal employment. As a consequence, about 60% of an entire generation could live their lives without ever holding a formal job. This time bomb is the greatest risk to social stability in South Africa.” According to Sonwabile Dwangu, a career guidance professional at Beautiful Gate.

How an in house doctor affects absenteeism
HR Best Practices Article by the CRF Institute
Ill health of employees still is the second largest cost to employers after wages. The good news however, is that workers don’t need to be sick long if they are properly managed.
From our international research into the HR policies and practices of Top Employers, we found that having an in house doctor has a significant effect on absenteeism. This article, part of the HR Best Practices series by the CRF Institute, explains how that an in house doctor affects absenteeism, illustrated by the ‘Best Practice in HR’ example of Dutch Top Employer Essent.

Transformation in South Africa | White Paper
As the voice of South Africa’s Best Employers, HR practitioners unpack, debate and rebuild thought leadership around the relationship between government and business; and the ways in which it can be leveraged to drive transformation through cooperation and collaboration rather than legislation.
Government feels that transformation is not happening quickly enough in the marketplace and is putting several proposed changes to labour laws in place to drive it. The proposed amendments to labour law include the Labour Relations Act, the Employment Equity Act, the Basic Conditions of employment Act, as well as the new Employment Services Bill, all of which are currently on the table at the National Economic Development and Labour Council (Nedlac). The legislation is currently under review and Government has conceded that some of the wording must be looked at.

Employee Value Proposition
Best Practices Video by the CRF Institute

Your Employee Value Proposition (EVP) is defined by what you offer your employees. What do your employees get from you in return for their time, their efforts and their engagement? A well-defined career path, a prime location, excellent primary benefits, …?
Based on our international research, we identified a best practice of four different steps to maximise the effect of your EVP on the attraction, retention and engagement of your staff.

Inaugural HR Vision Society Event | 14 June
Government feels that transformation is not happening quickly enough in the marketplace and they are putting several proposed changes to labour laws in place to drive it.
"Veteran labour analyst Andrew Levy said some of the provisions 'make Alice in wonderland look like a serious work of non-fiction' and could further undermine the government's plan to create five million new jobs by 2020"
Sunday Times, December 19, 2010
How can government and business collaborate better, in order to truly drive transformation in a meaningful way? The proposed amendments to labour law include the Labour Relations Act (LRA), the Employment Equity Act (EEA), the Basic Conditions of Employment Act (BCEA) as well as the new Employment Services Bill which are currently on the table at the National Economic Development and Labour Council (Nedlac).
The legislation is currently under review and government has conceded that some of the wording must be looked at.
If you would like to get involved please get in touch regarding the augural HR Vision Society meeting on June 14th where we will be work shopping the issues at hand and producing a white paper in response to the draft legislation.

A coalition between Government, the Private Sector and SETAs is necessary to tackle skills shortages
According to the latest skills survey from the Institute of Directors (IoD), the growth of nearly 60% of businesses is being held back by a lack of skills in the wider workforce and among existing employees.
Some commentators have argued that if the education crisis is not fixed, then businesses throughout South Africa will grind to a halt, and there have been calls for business to assume responsibility for solving the skills development challenges rather than relying on the national education and training system to do it for them.
According to some of South Africa’s best employers though, partnership is the key and business needs to support government.

Retention Drivers
Best Employer research shows that the Top Three Retention Drivers globally are:
1. An organisation's reputation as a great place to work
2. Satisfaction with the organisation's people decisions
3. A good relationship with the supervisor
The Best Employers certification questionnaire is based on this and other strategic human capital data. To find out more about the research and certification process, attend the Best Employers Open Day on March 10 in Johannesburg.

Will Marketing take over HR?
Employer Branding Article
Successful employer branding has a much broader remit than simply attracting, retaining and engaging talent. A strong employer brand is also what creates trust amongst customers, investors and shareholders.
HR professionals (not just marketers) must therefore become an important player in corporate and product marketing of the organisation. In fact some might suggest that unless HR is willing to do this, the HR director is in danger of losing his job to the marketing director.
